▌ 簡介Introduction

A slide backstory from my earlier work on Conceptual art in its “transmedium” emphasis—books reduced to illegible sculpture, acrylic painting on video monitors, images of TV static woven into a giant wall hanging—will set the stage. Based on new finds and findings, this talk will investigate and contextualize recent gallery objects from London, New York, and Copenhagen that continue this “demediating” function in a rear view mirror of media evolution that includes a 40-pound bound volume of “big data” (an on-line Japanese comix series) rather than legible pages, a heroic landscape drawing in charcoal defaced by desk-top icons as if it were a six foot screen capture, the wall-sized appropriation of Facebook (now fittingly “Meta”) selfies with artist comment added, the digital printing in vanishing sand of Covid victim photos, etc.

　　Garrett Stewart 教授於1971年從美國耶魯大學(Yale University)英文系獲頒博士學位，畢業後隨即至波士頓大學(Boston University)和加州大學聖塔芭芭拉分校(University of California, Santa Barbara)。1993年轉往愛荷華大學，接受該校人文領域最為聲名卓著的詹姆斯.弗利德曼教席(James O. Freedman Professorship of Letters)，並執教至今。生涯多次前往史丹佛、普林斯頓、弗萊堡、康斯坦茲、倫敦等地訪問，更獲得古根漢與美國國家人文基金會的獎助，於2010年獲選為美國藝術與科學學院院士。專長為維多利亞文學、文學理論、電影理論、數位電影、書籍研究與跨媒體藝術研究。研究論說以細緻的文本分析和跨領域的方法論見長，總能敏銳地指出藝術作品如何如何創制自身、改寫再現與風格的可能性。

　　Stewart 教授總共出版過二十一本專書，散見於英美兩地重要的大學出版社，如 哈佛、加州、約翰霍普金斯、芝加哥、康乃爾、劍橋等等。他早期的著作著重在 Dickens 與維多利亞文學研究。舉例來說，透過解構主義，他探討了死亡如何在英國文學當中被形構出來，人物又怎麼樣在想像當中消逝(Death Sentences, 1984)，而讀者默念文學的聲響(silent reading)則為文學的閱讀帶來了滑動的可能，並在語句的重組當中發掘嶄新的美學洞見(Dear Reader, 1996)。
　　他第一本關於電影的重要著作《在影片與銀幕之間》(Between Film and Screen, 1999)強調了底片上的影格與其膠捲黑格所能夠提出的影像本體論問題，到了第二本《框構時間》(Framed Time, 2007)則轉向至數位時代的像素和資料儲存如何重構時間在哲學上的意涵；第三本《封閉迴路》(Closed Circuits, 2015)則追溯了國家社會的監視機器如何由電影史折射出來──電影自身如何參與和思考無所不在的老大哥。然而，在這樣的理論演進當中，電影的範疇卻越來越和其他媒介難分難捨，而其中的競爭關係也越加顯著。最近的《電影機器》(Cinemachines, 2020)和《電影感知》(Cinesthesia, 2020)則把電影放在了跨媒體的疆域之中，探索敘事和環境如何激勵、創造著媒體的脈動。
