Populism and Crisis of Democracy

Populism and Crisis of Democracy
— Shu-Fen Lin, Institute of Social Research and Cultural Studies, National Chiao Tung University

The project aims at examining the trend to pair the crisis of democracy, in its different expressions, around the world over the past two decades with the “explosion of populism”. It will, first of all, delineate the changing discursive formation of “democracy vs. populism” in Taiwan since the late 1980s. At the same time, the constant expansion of the discursive field and its impacts will also be analyzed. The project will attempt, finally, to build up a theoretical framework and conduct comparative studies by collaborating with scholars from the so-called “new democracies”.
